Dutch government refusing to accept European Union standards
05-10-2009
The Dutch government’s willful rejection to take on European Union standards in guarding its state gambling monopoly kept on producing difficulties for the country this week as Betfair started a legal challenge and the European Commission ordered an examination into the possibility of activities against EU treaty requirements.
The most recent uproar stems from a challenge by the Dutch Minister of Justice, Ernst Hirsch Ballin, to block Dutch banks applying payments for online betting services, according to the newspaper Telegraaf.
A spokesman for the Commission explained to Telegraaf last week: “The European Commissioner has requested the proper services to start an examination into the banking obstruction. To the extent that we know, the Netherlands is the only country in Europe to do such a thing.”
Holland’s justice ministry bid banks not to allow transactions for Internet gambling services or to be ready to deal with the potential legal action.
