Online gambling creating problem in New Zealand
06-18-2009
As indicated by the study done by the Racing Board reported by the New Zealand Herald news paper, gamblers in New Zealand are spending around NZ$40 million a week on websites based in abroad. This amount equals to approximately twice what they spend on the state lottery.
The Board’s study saw that 5.7 % of New Zealanders, or 177 000 people, are gambling on websites abroad, overseas lotteries and sports betting, spending NZ$2.1 billion a year, or just below $40 million a week.
Problem Gambling Foundation spokesman David Coom explained that the survey proved that online gambling based out of the country was a extremely fast-mounting problem.
“It’s completely loose and there’s no aptitude to do any host responsibility around it,” he explained. “One of the main issues with problem gambling is that it prospers and increases in concealment, and certainly, online you are able to just sit at home and access it all you want.”
