Gambling influence in society examined in a book
02-11-2009
A book looking at the social influences of gambling entitled 'Casino State: Legalized Gambling in Canada' has been published by Professor Jim Cosgrave, a sociology professor at the Oshawa, Canada-based Trent University. In the book, the academic questions the validity of governments expanding budgets with taxes on revenues gained from gambling.
He says that the revenues from casino gambling have been vital for government budgets in a lot of Canadian regions, and, in spite of the recent financial slump, it’s ever more essential to consider the social costs of legitimate gambling. When governments get involved in the gambling business, they deal with awareness of their legality, and this is more important concerning the occurrence of problem gambling, which is a result of gambling-friendly policies.
