Estonia put its Gambling Act in practice. Under its regulation, online casinos are to be operated from servers located in the country. Before this change, law did not allow Estonian servers from hosting gambling, but currently sites located at servers outside the country are going to be blocked.
With this change, Estonia is aiming to boost government incomes. Internet gambling sites that want to cater to Estonians are required to pay a licensing fee and a five % sales tax on total income.
Estonia turns out to be the newest member of the European Union to take no notice of treaty regulations that require all members to acknowledge each other's licensing and regulatory processes, essential for the desired single market effect. Germany and France are amongst the countries against the EC on protectionist gaming policies.
The Estonia Free Press reported that the provision requiring online casinos to have base in Estonia would be lifted next year, authorizing free and fair competition to foreign Internet gambling operators.
