What would you do when you were told that you’ve won some life-changing amount of money and five minutes later, being told that it was a mistake? When Paul Kusznirewicz (55) of Ontario, Canada was playing Buccaneer slot machine at Georgian Downs Casino, he saw the lights and bells starting to make noise to say “Jackpot! You have won $42.9 million!” Five minutes later he was told: "We can't pay you that money because that machine is broken." In its place, the casino provided him with 4 dinner buffet coupons.
The player brought the matter up with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, but that association advocated the casino, explaining to Kusznirewicz that the slot machine's maximum payout was only $9,025.
OLG spokesperson Allison Sparkes explained that "It malfunctioned. It evidently malfunctioned. Each machine has a posted sign that shows malfunction voids all pays and plays."
Sparkes also explains a report gathered following the occurrence pointed out that the machine never really went into jackpot mode and that a wrong message flashed on screen.
